Lieutenant Joseph L. Szczerba

Lt. Szczerba was an eighteen-year veteran of the New Castle County Police Department. After graduating from the New Castle County Police Academy on January 13, 1995, he was assigned to the patrol division. In addition to patrol duties, Lt. Szczerba also served in the Criminal Investigations Unit, the Family Services Unit and Research, Development and Inspections Unit during his career.

Sgt. Szczerba was the victim of a felonious knife assault on September 16, 2011. Szczerba's wounds were fatal. At the time of his death, Joe was a Sergeant assigned to "E-Squad" as a patrol supervisor. Sgt. Szczerba was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, a promotion he was recommended for before his death.
